The Seafaris residence camp runs from July 30 through August 4 at the Skylark Ranch<\/a> near Santa Cruz.\u00a0 It is organized by the Girl Scouts of America. \u00a0No iPods, no phones, no Lady Gaga, no Nintendo, no distractions…. incommunicado for a week of fun, camaraderie and growth.<\/p>\n

June 30 (Friday)<\/h3>\n

Learned some songs on the bus. \u00a0Orientation walk-about. \u00a0Dinner: spaghetti, meatballs, lemonade and water. \u00a0Made s’mores\u00a0around\u00a0the campfire. \u00a0The banana Dad packed in my lunch got totally\u00a0squished. \u00a0Yuck!<\/p>\n

June 31 (Saturday)<\/h3>\n

Went sailing out of Santa Cruz Harbor for about an hour. \u00a0There was a\u00a0Ukulele\u00a0convention or\u00a0something\u00a0at the Harbor. \u00a0Sailing was a really awesome experience and I want to sail some more. \u00a0At night we had campfire get together around the Girls Scout campfire arena and watched other camper units do skits for us. \u00a0It was funny.<\/p>\n

August 1 (Sunday)<\/h3>\n

Visited Ano Nuevo State Park<\/a> and saw elephant seal. \u00a0Got lots of sand in my shoes. \u00a0Stinky there. \u00a0Dinner: tacos (meat, cheese, salad, salsa and sour cream). \u00a0Later, slept out in an open meadow under the stars. \u00a0Saw a shooting star! \u00a0Made a wish.<\/p>\n

August 2 (Monday)<\/h3>\n

High Ropes (The Leap of Faith and Multi-vine). \u00a0I did the “Leap of Faith”. \u00a0Wearing a helmet, climbing harness and safety rope with a belayer, I climbed 35 feet up a tree to a platform, then jumped off hitting a tethered ball as they fell. \u00a0The rope caught my fall before I hit the ground. \u00a0It was\u00a0exhilarating.<\/p>\n

August 3 (Tuesday)<\/h3>\n

We went to the Seymour Marine Discovery Center<\/a> and saw dolphins, “Poka” and “Prima”, and the\u00a0Hawaiian\u00a0Monk Seal, “Hoa”. \u00a0They also had a\u00a0female\u00a0elephant seal, “Bernyce”. \u00a0Walked inside a whale\u00a0skeleton. \u00a0When we got back we ate lasagna, bread sticks, popsicles and cupcakes for dessert for dinner. \u00a0Then we all got together for the last campfire and learned some more songs like “Moon Shadow” and “Meadow”. \u00a0We also did our skit this night. \u00a0It was called “The Talking Heads”. \u00a0It was really, really funny.<\/p>\n

August 4\u00a0(Wednesday)<\/h3>\n

Had breakfast and packed to come home. \u00a0Dad picked us up at the drop-off point in San Jose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skylark Ranch left me feeling more independent, more confident and helped me learn how to deal with being away from home. And above all, it was really fun and gave me opportunities to bond with my best friends, meet new friends and feel comfortable with myself.
