blood. The effect was really cool.

After that we learned what our first challenge was. One of our group would climb up the rigging a little ways with a bucket of water. The rest of the group would crowd together with our Tole Mour mugs on our heads. Whoever was in the rigging would try to dump the water on our heads and we would try to catch as much of it as we could. Anneka was the one who climbed up into the rigging. The Sharks got about 2 cups. I’m fairly sure we came in second place with the teams Simple Green (It cleans!) first and Dolphins (Oh snap!) last.

Our next challenge was very wet compared to the first. We had a kayak race. The catch was we didn’t have paddles. We could swim alongside the boat and pull it or get in the kayak and paddle with our hands. But we couldn’t have actual kayak paddles. Sharks claimed the middle kayak. Then we started. It was a mad dash to haul the kayak around the ship. It was even harder when the Captain started shouting how many kids should be in the kayak. At worst it was six kids in the kayak, which was almost everyone. Tommy got in the kayak and took the lead by swimming ahead and pulling the kayak. It was exhausting. Again Sharks placed second with Simple Green in the lead and Dolphins again pulling last. The Dolphins were behind us by a couple seconds which was a lot. 2 of their team members bailed out on them and didn’t participate. Devon and Isaac. Their reasons for not participating were sorta stupid. They didn’t want to get wet and cold, they claimed. Sure we got wet but we weren’t cold. At all. The water was pretty warm and the day was burning hot so definitely weren’t cold. “Sailors not bailers” and “Where’s the teamworkmanship?”

After that we had to get rid of 2 invasive species: The Iceberg Plant, and The Hog (Rosstopher and Mozerdactyl dressed up as them). One team went at a time. They would wait below-decks while the invasive species would hide. We would look for them, then tie their hands up with a bolan [bowline?] knot (square knot) before they were considered “caught”. The catch was we would have to look for them on our hands and knees. Simple Green went first, them it was us. Others found the Iceberg plant (Rosstopher) Tommy, a camper found the Hog (Mozerdactyl) and I got to tie her up. When we finished with that we waited on the foredeck for the Dolphins to finish so we would see who won.

Our next challenge was really hard. One person from each team was given a wet suit. Then the rest of the team would have to help them put on the wet suit. After getting it on the would do a “victory” lap and run and jump off the ship. I was chosen to put on the wet suit. It was a couple of minuets of nonstop pulling, tugging, yelling and fighting to jam my respective body parts into the designated clothing areas.

Our last challenge was one to see how fast we could hoist up Captain Snark like on of the sails. We all got in line and handed the rope down. Bursting into a chanty, we started hauling away at Captain Snark as fast as possible. Halfway through the challenge Captain Snark’s wig fell of and got stuck on one of the lines. We finally got him all the way up. After all the teams went the professional crew went. And dang, they pulled him up in a matter of seconds! It was amazing.

We had a ham and green beans (vegetable stir fry with brown rice for Korina and I due to our vegetarianism) dinner. Josh went on a hilarious rant about ketchup (“Ketchup is the American ketchup, Vodka is the Russian ketchup, hot sauce is the Mexican ketchup, soy sauce is the Chinese ketchup, and British food is just plain awful. Like seriously? What food could be so awful that it needs VINEGAR to make it taste better? Do you know what I use vinegar for? Cleaning windows!”). We spent 15 minutes trying to convince him that no, not all vinegar is used for cleaning purposes (a.k.a. malt vinegar). After dinner I went for a stroll and ended up at the stern. Maya was watching Darien and Nathan talk about something. “You’ll see. Just listen. It’s hilarious.” So I did. They were going on about kevlar, and juggernaut suits, and armor piercing bullets, and time travel, and nukes. “‘It’s a good thing I went back in time, to the dinosaur age, where there are no nukes and hid in a cave.’ ‘Oh yeah? It’s a good thing you got stuck in the cave with a T-rex trying to each your face!’ ‘Oh yeah? It’s a good thing T-rexes don’t fit in caves!'” It went on like that until the sound on the muster forward bell.

After muster forward we were finally dismissed to go below-decks and sleep. Since we were anchored, boys had anchor watch and girls had deck sleep. Only 4 girls signed up for deck sleep and all the boys did anchor watch. The rest of us had valid reasons for not doing deck sleep: 1. we were warm 2. we wouldn’t get soaked in dew 3. the rocking of the boat would not cause any accidental squishing of personnel and 4. we just wanted to stay below decks where it was just easier to be. In the end Korina, Merel and Riley canceled out leaving Anneka the only camper willing to do deck sleep. So staff canceled deck sleep altogether since one camper was not enough to spare a counselor for.

August 9 (Thursday): Day 6

[Headed out to do more ship operations and seamanship training and anchored at Shark Harbor for boogie-boarding and body surfing. Then to the southern tip of Santa Catalina Island hugging the coast. And finally around to their last anchor at Toyon Bay and night on the island. They had an ice cream party at Toyon Bay.]

AMS:

We woke up bright n early ready for some fun at Shark Harbor. Pulling on our wet suits was as always hard, but we were both comforted and saddened by the last time we would be doing so. Maya, Josh, Korina, and the rest of our tight group of friends were on the first boat, completed by our boogie boards. There was a slight hike to where we could boogie board and body surf, but it was worth it. The waves were amazing, huge, and perfect for riding. Most of us dove in as fast as possible.

I gave my boogie board to someone else, in favor of learning how to body surf. It was hard, floating around for the right wave and then trying to swim fast enough to catch it. I went under a lot when I tried to get wave, doing accidental flips and somersaults underwater. Later on Shanana gave me her boogie board and taught me how to board. Josh went under once and came back up covered in some bushy looking seaweed. He wore it for the rest of the time we spent in the water. The waves got larger as time passed, but even ones that looked huge we just floated over. Only the gigantic ones we caught.

It wasn’t until after we got out of the water and started hiking back to the harbor where the Landlord would come pick us up that I noticed just how tiring boogie boarding and body surfing could be. Everybody was going on and on about what food we were possibly having for lunch and if we’d get a chance to sleep.

When we got back to the ship we washed our wet suits in warm, soapy water before taking a 10 second hot water rinse and heading down belowdecks to change before a soft pretzel and mac-n-cheese lunch. We had a little amount of down time before what Ian, Anneka’s brother and another camper and Mr. Sparkles called, “Advanced Sailing Maneuvers”. Which was basically a whole bunch of tacking (bringing the bow of the boat through the eye of the wind) and jiving (bringing the stern of the boat through the eye of the wind) around the the tip of Santa Catalina.

Sharks got to be the first group to relieve the helm and, as Mr. Sparkles called it, bossing everyone around, a.k.a. shouting orders needed for the first tack. Since I was the first person to relieve the helm I got to do the first tack. There was an instrument by the ship’s wheel that told you what degree the rudder was at and which way it was turning ( _ degrees right rudder turns right and _ degrees left rudder turns left) with a sign on it that said, “Do not turn pass 30 degrees rudder”. Now I understood. Tacking and jiving was the most you would have to turn at exactly 30 degrees _ rudder. I had to continuously spin the wheel at a fast pace then when it reached 30 degrees hold it there until the tack was completed. Before that we had to shout commands so at the same time I turned the boat the sails would be brought around so we would continue being underway. After that we ran around bringing in sails

When we got to Toyon Bay, we had to give them our swell sharks that we caught yesterday. Some of the counselors/instructors from Toyon came aboard to take the sharks.

At muster forward Batdan announced that girls had anchor watch and boys had deck sleep. When he asked for girls to do Anchor Watch not surprisingly no girl wanted to do anchor watch. A full night of sleep was so worth it.

During the Off Pride that the Sharks had after dinner we watched Shanana set up a dance party. She hung up a disco ball and put plastic Hawaiian flower necklaces all over the place. It looked amazing.

After pride we filed into the mess for ice cream. It was a choice of chocolate, vanilla or both ice creams, with chocolate syrup, maraschino cherries, nuts, sprinkles, chocolate coated caramel bits, or chocolate chips. It was delicious. During that my friends Meghan and Dennis stole my camera and took a bunch of random pictures. After that Shanananana and Rosstopher started handing out awards. They were laminated pieces of paper that said some award about a person. Maya got Queen Of The Swing, Anneka got The Daredevil, Darien got The Stoke, Korina got The Mini Mini-Mate, Dennis got the Big Brother, Meghan got The Night Owl, and I got The Dancy Chanty.

We then filed out of the mess for a dance party. We were allowed to wear costumes. Everybody donned ridiculous dresses, hats, jackets, and wigs. The music was extremely loud, everyone having fun, dancing and laughing. When the song Call Me Maybe came on, everyone started doing this weird fist pump arm cross thing. You made both of your hands into fists, and pumped the right one up, then the left one, then both crossed like an x.

When the party ended, we headed down below to grab pillows and sleeping bags. Climbing onto one of the rooftops we settled down to watch a slideshow of our expedition. There where pictures of all the campers, what we did during E-543, and everything else in between. Watching it really got me to realize that it was my last night on the Tole Mour.

When we got back to our bunks Anneka and I burst into tears. All the girls spent 15 minutes giving hugs to every other girl. Meghan ran around making us all do a million group hugs.

<figure id="attachment_3980" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-3980" style="width: 300px" class="wp-caption target="_blank">SSV Tole Mour is a 156 ft (48 m) schooner and sail training vessel operating in the Channel Islands of California, off the West Coast of the United States.

Built by the Nichols Bros. Boat Builders on Whidbey Island in Washington’s Puget Sound to withstand the extreme conditions of the South Pacific, she is extremely seaworthy and meets or exceeds all of the United States Coast Guard’s regulations as a Sailing School Vessel, while offering luxurious accommodations in comparison to other tall ships. At 229 gross registered tons she is the largest active tall ship on the West Coast.

The Tole Mour was originally commissioned by the Marimed Foundation of Hawai’i in 1988 as a self-contained primary health care support vessel, operating in the US trust territory protectorate of the Marshall Islands. The name of the ship was selected by a competition of Marshall Islands school children, and means ‘A Gift of Life and Health’ in the Marshallese language. She served the outer islands for 4 years, providing medical services to over 15,000 islanders. With onboard medical, dental and ophthalmological offices, the Tole Mour served this role for 4 years, until the Marshallese government commissioned their own fleet of medical delivery vessels and the Tole Mour returned to Hawai’i to serve other purposes.

In her current incarnation, she is part of the Guided Discoveries’ Catalina Island Marine Institute, offering sail training, oceanography and marine biology education to hundreds of school-aged participants a year.
