{"id":4873,"date":"2013-01-25T07:37:13","date_gmt":"2013-01-25T15:37:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mightyelephant.com\/ams\/?p=4873"},"modified":"2016-04-24T15:30:53","modified_gmt":"2016-04-24T23:30:53","slug":"first-day-at-osa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mightyelephant.com\/ams\/first-day-at-osa\/","title":{"rendered":"OSA Week One"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>January 28, 2013 (Monday)<\/h3>\n<p>[First day at OSA. \u00a0We had to get up an hour earlier to catch the train \u00a0to the BART station then BART \u00a0to Oakland. \u00a0With school starting at 8:10 AM, it&#8217;s a long haul. \u00a0She will study science online (BYU Online) since OSA didn&#8217;t have room for her in their regular science classes.<\/p>\n<p>The School of Dance has the highest academic ranking of all the schools at OSA &#8211; so it&#8217;s a little bit exclusive. \u00a0She has to maintain a minimum 3.5 GPA to be able to perform &#8211; so the pressures on. \u00a095% of the graduates go on to college or university!<\/p>\n<p>Everybody&#8217;s really friendly and helpful. \u00a0She&#8217;s already made several friends. \u00a0There are only seven students (including AMS) in the dance emphasis in the 7th grade. \u00a0They all wear their leotards, tights and buns to their classes everyday. \u00a0Although considered one of the &#8220;normal&#8221; girls, she fits right in, .]<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4881\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4881\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mightyelephant.com\/ams\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/2013-01-28-07.47.19-e1461540507395.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4881 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mightyelephant.com\/ams\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/2013-01-28-07.47.19-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"First Day OSA\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4881\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">First Day OSA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>I woke up at 5:00 AM today, with no time for coffee. \u00a0It was really cold, and I was yawning a lot. \u00a0Even though I hadn&#8217;t had any coffee, I was unable to sleep. \u00a0When we got there, I took one look at everybody else&#8217;s clothes and thought, wow I look so un-OSA! \u00a0My dad had to keep reminding me to stop smiling because everyone else could tell I was new because of that. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The other new dance girl was called Ava. \u00a0She&#8217;d taken the summer intensive there, which\u00a0meant\u00a0the other dancers already knew her. \u00a0I spent first period waiting outside the main office. \u00a0After that, Avery, a very happy and excitable 7th grade dancer took me and Ava to second period, which was English with Ms. Bradburn. \u00a0We had ballet\/contemporary dance next, and because it was a minimum day, we did a work instead of any dancing. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>There were many\u00a0push-up\u00a0activities, some jogging with pointed feet, and\u00a0exercises\u00a0designed to improve flexibility. \u00a0Compared to how well everybody else was doing, I felt so out of shape! \u00a0I didn&#8217;t have Mr. Savage that day. \u00a0 Instead I had Ms. Hurley, another dance teacher. \u00a0She assigned this girl named Alana, who I met at SFB, to be \u00a0my dance guide. \u00a0We didn&#8217;t have lunch, and instead Ms. Bradburn, also my History teacher, allowed us to eat in class. \u00a0I had math as last period. \u00a0Ms. Humphrey, my math teacher, helped me get up to speed on what everybody else in the class was doing. \u00a0Dismissal\u00a0time was 12:50. \u00a0We took the BART and Caltrain home.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mightyelephant.com\/ams\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/2013-01-28-08.06.23-e1461540542262.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4882 size-medium\" title=\"New School Friends\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mightyelephant.com\/ams\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/2013-01-28-08.06.23-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>January 29, 2013 (Tuesday)<\/h3>\n<p>[Second Day: \u00a0We&#8217;re both very tired already. \u00a0Today was a 14 hour day which started at 6:15 AM and ended when we got home around 8:45 PM. \u00a0Tomorrow I&#8217;m going to let AMS go by herself to OSA. \u00a0I&#8217;ll drive up later and meet her at the BART station in SF for her ballet class in the City.]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Today I got up about 15 minutes later then I was supposed to (5:15 AM). \u00a0I managed to get some coffee, and was still sore from Monday.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4899\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4899\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mightyelephant.com\/ams\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/2013-01-29-07.36.45-e1461540565814.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4899 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mightyelephant.com\/ams\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/2013-01-29-07.36.45-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Second Day\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4899\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Second Day<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>January 30, 2013 (Wednesday)<\/h3>\n<p>[Up early as usual &#8211; 5:00 AM &#8211; for the long commute to Oakland. \u00a0It&#8217;s still dark outside but need to catch the early bullet train. \u00a0City Ballet after school in SF tonight]<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4901\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4901\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mightyelephant.com\/ams\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/2013-01-31-06.20.44-e1461540586870.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4901 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mightyelephant.com\/ams\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/2013-01-31-06.20.44-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Waiting for the Train\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4901\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Waiting for the Train<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>[The BART from Millbrae to 19th Street Station was really late this morning but because she doesn&#8217;t have a first period class it&#8217;s OK for her to be delayed. This was OK&#8217;d by Ms. Peters. \u00a0More gushing enthusiasm from Amelia. She&#8217;s loving OSA &#8211; every minute of it. She got a pretty hard workout today and was having some thoughts but she hung in there and overcame. Mr. Savage is giving them a real training in dance &#8211; a combination of detail information about which muscle groups are being used (or should be used) and practical physical training. She&#8217;s learned some Pilates stretches and more details about technique. \u00a0Nothing but raves about the teaching methodology of OSA.]<\/p>\n<h3>January 31, 2013 (Thursday)<\/h3>\n<p>[Same as yesterday.] \u00a0<strong>The dance emphasis students, of which I&#8217;m a new member, have a typical &#8220;dress code&#8221;,\u00a0hair\u00a0up in a bun, leotards and tights on, sweater and jeans or shorts, and wearing a scarf. \u00a0All the dance emphasis students wear this outfit (except the boys). \u00a0 Once again, City Ballet after school.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>February 1, 2013 (Friday)<\/h3>\n<p>[We met one of AMS friends mom at the train station this morning. \u00a0Hopefully they&#8217;ll be able to ride together for some portion of the trip. \u00a0AMS successfully completed the entire trip to school and back by herself. \u00a0I&#8217;m so proud of her. \u00a0Again rave reviews of the things they&#8217;re doing at OSA and the training she&#8217;s getting. \u00a0I can&#8217;t believe it&#8217;s free!]<\/p>\n<p><strong>BART was really delayed again today going through SF. \u00a0No matter, I don&#8217;t have a first period this semester. \u00a0<\/strong><strong>Today at school it was College Day, and they changed the bell sound to a college&#8217;s fight song.
