Betsy Ross
Betsy Ross and the Revolutionaries

This event was a performance by the 5th grade classes to depict the American Revolution.  The purpose was to teach attending parents about an important part of American history.  The students were organized into groups, including the “Redcoats”, the “White Tories” and the “Blue Rebels”.  They were either patriots or “Redcoats”.  The “King George” character was part of the the “Blue Rebels” for some reason and it’s known that he was actually with the Imperialists.  Somehow it all made sense.

The kids performed different monologues representing their respective political inclination.  AMS played Betsy Ross and Mary Draper.  AMS, a.k.a. “Betsy Ross” talked making the first official American flag.  The thirteen stars and stripes represented the original thirteen colonies and the stripes had to start with red and end with red.  Betsy Ross was the first introduce the five-pointed star because it was easy to cut with one snip.

Mary Draper gave up her entire food stores to feed the Continental army and melted down all her priceless family heirloom and dish-ware to make bullets to help fight the Imperialists.

It was a lot of fun for the kids and the parents.
