Thanksgiving Day 2013

November 28, 2013

Spending Thanksgiving with old friends and getting re-acquainted with my school buddy.  As usual Dad is doing the rib roast and hors d’oeuvres.  I’m making the salad and mashed potatoes.  The Chengs are doing the rest.

Dinner Menu:

  • Rib Roast with Rosemary and Sea Salt (4 ribs @ 9.3 lbs)
  • Yorkshire Pudding
  • Mash potatoes and gravy
  • Salad with mizithra cheese and grapes
  • Pt Reyes Blue Cheese, caviar and capers on crackers
  • Cabbage & Crème soup
  • Bourbon sweet potatoes
  • Sautéed Brussels sprouts

So nice to enjoy Thanksgiving with friends and family!  And such yummy food!  And Dad and Dennis are talking about going skiing this winter!

The River-Merchant’s Wife: A Letter by Ezra Pound

While my hair was still cut straight across my forehead
I played about the front gate, pulling flowers.
You came by on bamboo stilts, playing horse,
You walked about my seat, playing with blue plums.
And we went on living in the village of Chokan:
Two small people, without dislike or suspicion.

At fourteen I married My Lord you.
I never laughed, being bashful.
Lowering my head, I looked at the wall.
Called to, a thousand times, I never looked back.

At fifteen I stopped scowling,
I desired my dust to be mingled with yours
Forever and forever and forever.
Why should I climb the look out?

At sixteen you departed,
You went into far Ku-to-yen, by the river of swirling eddies,
And you have been gone five months.
The monkeys make sorrowful noise overhead.

You dragged your feet when you went out.
By the gate now, the moss is grown, the different mosses,
Too deep to clear them away!
The leaves fall early this autumn, in wind.
The paired butterflies are already yellow with August
Over the grass in the West garden;
They hurt me. I grow older.
If you are coming down through the narrows of the river Kiang,
Please let me know beforehand,
And I will come out to meet you
As far as Cho-fu-Sa.

Placido Domingo at the Greek Theater

September 7, 2013 @ the Greek Theater, UC Berkeley

The Oakland School for the Arts gave away 300 tickets to the Placido Domingo concert at the Greek Theater and we took advantage of it.  We enjoyed  a world class performance by one of the most celebrated tenors of our time.  Placido Domingo performed with Angel Joy Blue and Micaela Oeste, both sopranos.

Their program included works from Wagner, Gounod, Verdi, Strauss  and contemporary songs from Frederick Lowe’s “I Could Have Dance All Night” – M y Fair Lady,  Richard Rogers’ “Some Enchanted Evening” – South Pacific, and Leonard Bernstein’s “Tonight” from West Side Story, to name a few.  A truly once in a life-time opportunity!

They performed a total of six encores including “Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better” from Annie Get Your Gun and “If I Loved You” from Carousel and the all-time favorite “Besame Mucho”.  What an evening!

Dance was even better than yesterday.  The school has a very strict absence policy now.  There’s no longer an excused absence, all absences are unexcused and affects the grade.  The Dance emphasis has a 4 absence limit before it starts bringing your grade down.

Amelia withdrew from her studies at OSA to transfer back to the Palo Alto Unified School District (PAUSD).  The daily commute had become to hard on her.

Pacific Ballet Academy 2013 – 2014

Pacific Ballet Academy 2013-2014 School Year

Starts: August 26 2013

Ends: June 7, 2014

Amelia has been placed in Level V at PBA.  She’s scheduled to take 7 1/2 hours per week for starters. The Director invited her to attend the Level VI Pointe class but she can’t get to PBA in time for the class @ 4:00 – she can barely arrive at her one 4:30 class because of the commute from Oakland

Among other roles, she’s eligible to audition for the Nutcracker as one of the Pointe Angels.  She’s back with her old school and teachers.  She will also volunteer in Miss Karen’s class to help teach the younger students (like she was assisted when she was a little dancer).  She will also take private training with Anton Pankevich after her class once a week.  [This will also help me prepare for the auditions in January].
